Today, I want to explore a concept that has been on my mind—something called “the flow state.” The flow state is also known as being “in the zone”. The feeling can only be described as a mental state of complete absorption and a feeling of being laser focused in an activity. When you’re in that flow state, there is a heightened sense of concentration, a merging of action and awareness, and a feeling of effortless control over the task at hand.
This year, I started by redirecting my focus on things that bring on the flow state rather than on things that bring on the stress. For me, one of those things is creating art. While 2022 and 2023 were the years of digital art, I’ve decided to revisit my passion for physical art through acrylic painting. There is something about paint and the life it takes on when the brush hits the canvas. It’s easy to get in a flow state once you know where you’re going. And at times it carries you along without effort.
After two years focusing on digital art, I was able to find out that some of the skills I developed in digital art have served me well for physical art such as shading, understanding layering, painting eyes and lips. I won’t lie though, I often find myself tapping two fingers on the physical canvas in times my brushstrokes take me places I don’t always intend; only those familiar with Procreate on iPad will understand.
Being in a flow state involves such an intense focus that causes all distractions to fade away, and there is a heightened clarity of thought. You can often lose awareness of yourself and your surroundings. Time becomes distorted and non-existent. The experience is seamless and effortless to the point where it feels that the task carries you away rather than the other way around.
Forgetting yourself can be liberating, and I highly encourage it! It alleviates all the pressure of expectations and it immerses you in a state of just pure doing and being. At some point, I’ve found a flow state in painting, skating, dancing, and writing. These activities allow me to escape and experience a sense of bliss that comes from being fully engaged in the present moment. Being in a flow state provides many benefits, including mental and physical.
Benefits of the Flow State:
- Enhanced Productivity: When you’re in the flow state, distractions are minimized, and your focus is laser-sharp. This heightened concentration often leads to increased productivity and efficiency in your tasks.
- Stress Reduction: The immersive nature of the flow state prevents dwelling on stressors and anxieties. As you are fully engaged in the act of being, stress tends to naturally dissipate.
- Increased Creativity: The flow state is known to foster a state of creative brilliance. Ideas flow effortlessly, and the seamless progression in actions allows for innovative thinking and problem-solving.
- Sense of Fulfillment: Engaging in activities that induce the flow state provides a deep sense of satisfaction and fulfillment. The intrinsic rewards from the process itself contribute to a lasting sense of well-being.
- Time Distortion: The altered sense of time in the flow state can make activities more enjoyable. It’s a unique experience where hours can feel like minutes, allowing you to fully savor and appreciate the present moment.
The key to the flow state is to find something that captivates you completely, making everything else fade into the background. Throw away all expectation when it comes to the outcome. Time and space will soon become irrelevant as you immerse yourself fully, without the distractions of multitasking. There will be no past, present, or future in the flow state.
Unlike passive activities such as watching tv and scrolling through social media, finding the flow state requires active engagement. It’s about being fully present, actively participating in the moment. Allow no disconnection between you and the task. You can start by doing and then let the doing carry you away. Sometimes it takes a while to reach the flow state, but keep at it; eventually, you will find yourself in it when you redirect your focus intensely on every step of the doing. The key is no expectations.
When you discover the flow state, you defy the idle hands proverb, as you’re no longer idle; instead, you’re actively shaping your experience. This shift prevents dwelling on stressors and anxieties, allowing you to give yourself permission—without actually needing permission—to be fully engaged in the act of being. You don’t need permission to just be.
The outcome? If you must know, the outcome is that you will excel in everything that you do, although this should be far from your mind. The thought that you will excel at this or that is not the goal, and it will actually interfere with the possibility of it being so. The only goal is to excel remaining focused throughout—to remain fully immersed.
Finding the flow state is a unique form of meditation, devoid of traditional rituals or chants. It’s a way to connect with oneself while disconnecting from the external world. The key is to identify what inspires your flow state. It can be anything!
So, whether it’s through the strokes of a brush, the rhythm of a dance, the words on a page, or any other activity that captivates your attention, embracing the flow state is about connecting with your inner self and experiencing the joy of being fully present in the moment.
Key Characteristics of the Flow State:
- Intense Focus: Individuals in a flow state concentrate intensely on the present moment, becoming fully immersed in the activity. Distractions fade away, and there is a heightened clarity of thought.
- Loss of Self-awareness: During the flow state, individuals often lose awareness of themselves and their surroundings. The sense of time may become distorted, and the person is fully engaged in the task without self-consciousness.
- Effortless Action: Flow involves a sense of effortless and fluid performance. Despite the challenges of the activity, individuals feel a natural and seamless progression in their actions.
- Clear Goals and Feedback: There is a clear sense of purpose and defined goals during the flow state. Immediate feedback that comes from within is often present, enabling individuals to adjust their actions in real-time.
- A Merging of Action and Awareness: The distinction between the performer and the performance, or the subject and the object, blurs during the flow state. It is a state of holistic involvement.
- Intrinsically Rewarding: The activity itself is inherently rewarding, and individuals experience a deep sense of satisfaction from the process rather than relying on external rewards or validation.
Activities that can induce a flow state vary widely and can include creative pursuits like art, music, and writing, as well as physical activities such as sports or even certain work tasks. The experience of flow is subjective and unique to each individual, but it is universally characterized by a sense of deep engagement and fulfillment in the chosen activity.
~In the river of life, find your flow and let every moment carry you to a place of timeless joy. ~🌸
