What if I Told You that These are the Good Ole’ days?

Idealizing the Past

I belong to groups on Facebook that celebrate the nostalgia of the 80s and 90s, where we share images and reminisce about the past. It’s a wonderful feeling to be part of a community that uniquely understands and shares the nostalgia for those bygone days. However, in these groups, there is a tendency to compare the past to the present, often idealizing the “good ole days” and dismissing or even harshly criticizing the music, movies, and experiences of the present. This inclination to idealize the past while not honoring the present made me reflect on how this does not allow us to see the present moment for what it is – equally worthy and just as precious. We are blindsided when we don’t notice what’s right in front of us. It’s also helpful to keep in mind that there is a bias when looking at the past from an adult perspective. Let’s travel back to our childhood and then back to the future to to get a fresh perspective and understand this bias a little better.

Longing for What Is Gone

It feels like so long ago when the world before the internet was our reality. We spent our days riding bikes with friends from morning until sunset. On hot, sunny days, we would grab the hose and play Slip and Slide while “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears played on a distant radio. Sleepovers consisted of telling ghost stories in a handmade tent, and for hours on end, we would play Super Mario Bros. while sharing game hacks like prized secrets. Playing pretend with friends and climbing trees allowed us to explore our imaginations, while eagerly waiting for the ice cream truck to bring us frozen treats. Friday nights were my favorite, as my brother and I would rent movies at the nearby mom-and-pop video store and then stay up all night watching movies on the USA network. Remember waiting for your favorite music video to come on MTV? And how can we forget the ultimate bliss of wandering through the aisles of Toys “R” Us?

Experiencing the Present While Thinking about the Past

It’s hard not to feel a twinge of nostalgia and wish we could step into Doc’s DeLorean. Amidst the nostalgia, I can’t help but laugh to myself at the delightful irony. Here I am, reminiscing about the past and longing for those simpler days, while typing away on a device that harnesses the power of the internet, connecting me to a world of endless information and possibilities. Life has a funny way of reminding us that we can appreciate the past while embracing the marvels of the present. So, rather than fixate on what is lost, let’s also celebrate all that we’ve gained! It’s a testament to the progress we’ve made and the amazing experiences that await us in this digital age. All this fondness we feel toward the past does not have to overshadow or blot out the present. We can instead focus on how the marvels of the digital age have made our lives so much easier and more enriching. Perhaps we are taking all those things for granted.

Let’s Reassess Our Perspective

Let’s think about it for a moment. In the past, buying groceries, clothing, or any other item often required standing in long lines at crowded stores. Heck, I remember having to go in person to pay bills, and having to do it right after a work shift is the worst! We’d have to go in person to fill out forms and spend our valuable time on mundane tasks that we can now do in the comfort of our homes. Now we can even work from home! Imagine being told in the past that in the future you could work from home. I bet you would have longed to be in the future then. The digital revolution has transformed these inconveniences into mere blips in our lives. Now we can shop and pay bills with just a few clicks – no need to endure those long lines or crowded stores. We can now save time and energy for the things we really love to do. We can now access endless entertainment options, connect with loved ones across the globe in an instant, and access a wealth of information at our fingertips. The present moment is filled with its own wonders and possibilities. It’s all a matter of appreciating and recognizing them.

Become Aware of the Illusion of “The Good Ole’ Days”

It’s important to recognize that our perceptions of the past can be influenced by a bias psychologists refer to as “rosy retrospection”. Rosy retrospection involves the tendency to idealize and romanticize the past, emphasizing its positive aspects while downplaying or even forgetting the challenges and drawbacks that were also present. It’s basically like viewing the past through rose-colored glasses.

Childhood, for instance, is often remembered as a carefree time of innocence and joy. But when we dig deeper, we realize that even during those years, we faced our own set of challenges and struggles. We might have been teased in school, felt the pressure to fit in, or experienced family problems that were beyond our control. Being a kid wasn’t always easy. We depended on others for survival, which meant relying on our parents or guardians for our basic needs. Everything was new and unfamiliar, and this could be overwhelming and sometimes scary. Starting a new school, making friends, and adapting to new environments could be daunting. And others kids can be mean too. Even I, teased in school because of my elf ear, sometimes idealize the past and forget just how difficult it felt to not fit in. 🧝🏻‍♀️

While today’s generation benefits from instant access to information and online support, they also face challenges such as the permanence of information online and the prevalence of cyberbullying. I specifically wanted to highlight this last part since I feel it’s important to acknowledge that each generation’s struggles are valid and significant in their own right.

With Nostalgia comes Fear of the Unknown

Amidst the excitement of the bright future that awaits us, it’s natural to feel a sense of apprehension or nostalgia for the past. Sometimes, fear of the unknown and the uncertainty of what lies ahead can make us fixate on the familiar, longing for “the good ole’ days”.  In those days, we knew how things were, how they worked, and what to expect. But the future, with all its uncertainties, can be intimidating. The rapid pace of technological advancements, the rise of AI, and the potential of quantum computing might leave some feeling anxious or apprehensive. It’s important to acknowledge these sentiments and understand that they stem from a deep-rooted fear of change and a desire to fit in.

An Inclusive Future: AI Revolution

However, let me assure you that the future holds a place for everyone from all generations. The transformative nature of our evolving society offers unprecedented opportunities for individuals of all backgrounds to thrive and find their unique roles. The future driven by AI embraces diversity and inclusivity. AI-powered systems are designed to recognize and nurture individual talents, enabling each person to contribute in their own way. These systems are tailored to individual needs and abilities, recognizing and nurturing each person’s unique talents.

With AI, education becomes more inclusive and accessible, democratizing the opportunity for quality learning to reach a wider audience. Gone are the days of an education system with standardized tests that fails to capture the full potential of unique individuals. The power of AI in education lies in its ability to empower learners, helping them unlock their full potential and shape their own educational journey. If this isn’t enough to get you excited, let’s discuss other amazing things we have to look forward to…things that are already starting to unfold before our very eyes!

The Future’s so Bright, We Gotta Wear Shades

Take off those rose-colored glasses and put on some shades – the future is going to be incredibly bright! AI and Quantum Computing are set to revolutionize our world by processing and analyzing vast amounts of data at lightning speed. This breakthrough will pave the way for astonishing predictions in various domains. Weather predictions, for instance, will become more reliable than ever before. Now, you can plan your vacations with confidence. No more ruined vacations because of unpredictable weather. Want to bask in the Caribbean? Want to see snow? What about the Northern Lights? Well, now, you can plan your vacations with confidence, knowing that AI algorithms will be able to analyze historical weather patterns and guide you to choose the perfect time and place for the vacation of your dreams. AI is already beginning to transform the way we interact with the world around us.

But the benefits of AI and Quantum Computing go even further. Imagine a world where previously incurable diseases are now within reach of being conquered. With the power of AI and Quantum Computing, medical breakthroughs are on the horizon. These advanced systems will delve into vast repositories of medical data, uncovering hidden patterns and accelerating the development of innovative treatments. From cancer to Alzheimer’s, diseases that once seemed insurmountable will be met with new hope and potential cures.

Another thing that AI algorithms and Quantum Computing will be able to do is uncover hidden patterns in the universe and assist in understanding phenomena. As someone captivated by the mysteries of the universe, this one is incredibly exciting for me. Do you realize how much this has the potential to advance our understanding of the universe? AI may finally help us unravel the mysteries of dark matter, black holes, and even explore the possibilities of interstellar travel! Put on your space suits my friends, where we’re going…we don’t need roads.

The future promises a place where the unique abilities and aspirations of every individual can find fulfillment. By harnessing the power of technology, we can build a society where people of all ages thrive, share their wisdom, and find fulfillment in pursuing their passions. Let us overcome our fears, embrace the opportunities before us, and forge a future that celebrates our diversity, curiosity, and boundless potential. Together, we can create a future that surpasses even our wildest dreams.

The Balance Between Nostalgia and the Present: Embrace Transience

Japanese culture offers a concept called “mono-no-awareness,” which captures the essence of appreciating the transient nature of life. How can you embrace the transient nature of life in your own experiences? It reminds us that everything is impermanent, including our present experiences.

Just like the fleeting beauty of sakura flowers, the moments we cherish today will inevitably pass. You will most likely look back and also think of today as “the  good ole’ days”. By embracing this awareness, we can find beauty in the ephemeral nature of life and fully immerse ourselves in the richness of each passing moment. By understanding the nature of nostalgia, appreciating the present moment, and embracing the concept of transience, we can consciously choose to appreciate the beauty and potential of the here and now.

Our experiences have shaped us, and it’s important to honor and appreciate the journey that has brought us here. But by fixating on the past and overlooking the gifts of the present, we are missing the point. The nostalgia we feel for what is gone should not overshadow the excitement and possibilities of the future while enjoying the present moment.

The current moment is fleeting, and with the rapid pace of change in our world, it may soon become the cherished memories of tomorrow. So, let us embrace it, celebrate the music, movies, places, people, and experiences that surround us, and create lasting memories that we can one day look back on and say…❤️.
